Great info, Alex. Thank you for sharing this about the natural options for weight loss. I fractured my foot and have been gaining weight because I can’t walk on it. Would love to hear your advice on dealing with temporary immobility and staying fit.

Very sorry to hear of your injury. I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Unless you're in a boot and have access to machines for upper body exercises, you're best bet is to put heavier emphasis on dietary changes during your recovery period. I recommend the following:

> Reduce your food intake to a little less than normal, to account for the reduction in physical activity you'll experience while your foot heals.

> Start a food journal to keep track of what you're consuming. If you don't want to track your eating, then try coming up with a meal plan that reduces variety so you can get a clearer picture of what and how much you're eating. Too much variety makes this very difficult.

> Get junk food out of the house, especially now. Since you're immobile, boredom will strike. Don't let snacks be the only way to occupy yourself. I'd get rid of any food (other than fruits and vegetables) that don't require some level of preparation (if possible). This makes it harder to snack mindlessly.

The silver lining: Since most of your daily routines are disrupted from their normal status quo, this is a prime opportunity to begin developing some new healthy habits. Take advantage of it.

All of the above advice is what I used after a surgery that left me mostly inactive (other than light walking) for six weeks. I actually lost some weight during that time. The injury doesn't have to lead to weight gain. :-)
