On one of my first days as a fitness coach working in a commercial gym, an older veteran trainer, we’ll call her Mary, approached me and kindly introduced herself. She trained many of the older gym members. She specialized in helping these folks maintain their independence. We would come to have great chats throughout my year there.
Before I left to start A-Team Fitness, I vividly remember her wishing me luck. But then she added, “It’s good that your young and single. I don’t know how anyone could make enough money as a personal trainer to raise a family.”
Her husband was an engineer and, while she maintained a pretty good client load, she attributed her quality of life to her husband’s salary.
She was wrong, and I’m glad I knew that back then.
On July 1st we celebrated A-Team Fitness’ eighth year in business. We’ve gone from helping a handful of local gym members to impacting lives across 16 states and 6 countries. We’re building a team of dedicated and skillful coaches. We are making a real impact.
Mary retired at the start of the pandemic. She remained an employee at that gym until she retired. She left excited to spend more time with her grandkids. She always loved talking about them. I hope she’s happy.
Beliefs are an integral part of our identity. They drive our actions because they drive what we think is possible.
Mary didn’t think being in the fitness industry was lucrative, or at the very least, sustainable. As a result of this belief, she remained stuck while relying on her husband.
There’s nothing wrong with coasting. If you reach a point where you’re happy and content and don’t feel driven to pursue anything more, the more power to you.
But I didn’t share her belief. I knew I could make something of myself in this industry. I believed I could build something.
So I left to try.
Be careful what beliefs you hold. They will decide your future more than anything else.
To your success,
~ Coach Alex
I believe, you are right, thank you.
