Why Strength Training is the Closest Thing to a Superpower
When you think about strength training, you might picture lifting heavy weights or building muscle—and yes, those are great benefits.
But strength training does so much more than change how your body looks.
It’s about what your body can do: lifting, moving, staying active, and avoiding pain.
One of the most underrated benefits? Strength training literally makes your bones stronger, and that’s a game-changer for your long-term health.
Unbreakable
Strength training stimulates your bones, just like it does your muscles. Over time, this makes your bones denser and more resilient.
Why does that matter?
As we age, we naturally lose bone density, and for many, this leads to osteoporosis—a condition where bones become fragile and prone to fractures.
With regular strength training, you can slow or even prevent that loss, keeping your bones strong and healthy.
I’ll never forget when I had a DEXA scan before my second bodybuilding show—a test that measures bone density.
After the scan, the nurse walked into the room, looked at me, and said, “What are you doing with your exercise and diet?”
I told her, “Lifting weights and eating protein,” and she replied, “Your bone density is two standard deviations above the norm.”
For a moment, I felt like a superhero.
Like Bruce Willis in the movie, “Unbreakable.”
Strength training can do that—it makes your body more capable, more resilient, and ready to take on whatever life throws at it.
6 Additional Benefits of Strength Training
Bone density is just the start. Strength training has a ripple effect on nearly every aspect of your health:
Increased Energy
Forget the afternoon slump. Strength training boosts your energy levels, helping you feel more alert and productive throughout the day.Improved Mobility and Function
It’s not just about being able to lift weights in the gym—it’s about being able to lift your groceries, play with your kids, or climb the stairs without discomfort. Strength training improves your ability to handle everyday tasks with ease.Reduced Pain
Many people struggle with back pain, joint issues, or other chronic discomforts. Building stronger muscles around those areas can alleviate pressure and reduce pain, making life more enjoyable.Better Metabolism
Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. By building muscle through strength training, you increase your resting metabolic rate, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight.Mental Resilience
Strength training isn’t just physical—it’s mental. Pushing through challenging workouts builds confidence and grit, which carry over into other areas of life.Longevity and Quality of Life
Studies show that strength training helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and even cognitive decline. Plus, staying strong means staying independent as you age.
How To Start
You don’t need to be an athlete or a gym regular to reap the benefits of strength training.
You just need to start where you are.
That could mean lifting dumbbells, using resistance bands, or even just doing bodyweight exercises like squats or push-ups.
Aim to strength train 2-3 times per week, and pair it with a diet rich in protein to fuel muscle growth and repair.
You’ll start noticing the benefits—more energy, less pain, and greater confidence—almost immediately.
Strength Training Makes Superheroes
It’s not just about building muscle or hitting the gym.
Strength training gives you a body that’s strong, resilient, and capable.
It prepares you for life’s challenges and helps you age with grace and independence.
Who doesn’t want to feel a little more like a superhero every now and then?
Start small, stay consistent, and see for yourself why strength training is one of the most powerful tools for better health.
