Takeaway: Why I got nervous walking into a new gym, and what it means for fitness coaches everywhere.
I walked into a new gym last week, one I’d never been in before.
And I was nervous.
It didn’t matter that I’ve spent nearly every day of the last decade in gyms working as a fitness professional.
It was new. It was unknown. I was nervous to walk through the door.
There were many thoughts racing through my mind. Would the staff be friendly? Would the other members be friendly? Would they accept this new face entering their space? Would I look like an idiot if they had equipment I’d never seen before?
If I get nervous entering a gym for the first time, imagine what it feels like if you’ve never stepped foot in a gym your entire life.
I try to keep this in mind whenever a new face reaches out for help.
If a coach can’t see the world through the perspective of the people they help, both parties are doomed to fail.
This is why it’s so important to create a welcoming environment for new faces.
