Reader Question
What motivates you to maintain your own health, to keep off the weight you lost? How do you find the time?
For a long time it was fear of going back to where I was.
After a while, it became a part of my identity. If I don’t maintain where I’m at, I don’t feel like myself anymore.
This is something many folks don’t immediately understand when embarking on a fitness journey. To be successful long-term is to fundamentally change a big part of who you are.
For the better, of course, but a big change nonetheless.
I also saw how much I was held back from experiencing when I was out of shape. Far more than I even realized at the time.
When I got in shape, a whole new world opened up to me.
I’m motivated to ensure I never have to sit out of an activity that I want to take part in.
This aspect can be tough to comprehend if you’ve never been in shape. It’s even more difficult to put in the work on the faith of what you’ll get later on, especially if you don’t know what that feels like.
But once you experience the difference, there’s no going back.
Those things together make for a pretty strong insurance policy that I’ll stay consistent with my fitness.
In the end, you have to find your own reasons. For some it’s to get back to a hobby they love. For others, it’s to be able to get on the floor to play with the grandkids.
The right reason makes all the difference.

What motivates me is feeling good and maintaining my health as I enter middle age. I’ve done what I can to eat mostly clean and to avoid processed food (especially fast food). I make time for at least 4-5 hours for working out at the gym (cardio, HIIT and Pilates reformer and yoga for strength) per week plus use a standing desk at work and do 30 minutes of walking outside or cardio in my office during lunch. I have seen a difference and I believe it will hopefully help keep me younger age wise.
