“Keep the story moving forward.”
This is a foundational rule in improv comedy.
When you’re creating comedy without a script, you don’t know what information will come next.
You don’t know if it’ll be funny, yet.
But if you keep moving the plot of the story forward, eventually there will come a moment to insert humor.
When we’re feeling anxious about a possible bad outcome, we tend to end the story at that moment of unpleasantness.
Instead, take this lesson and ask yourself, “and then what?”
And then what can you do about the situation should that fear come true?
And then how can you solve the problem?
No matter what, keep moving the story forward.
