Takeaway: Encourage others to think bigger.
Some thoughts on inspiring others to achieve more:
Economics professor Tyler Cowen used to be the Graduate Director of Admissions for his university.
In one interview, he shared an interesting strategy he would apply to incoming master’s applicants: When he came across a strong applicant for a Masters program, he would automatically grant them admissions to the Ph.D program as well.
This often resulted in strong students earning doctorate degrees when they otherwise thought it out of reach for them.
In this interview he shared this powerful bit of advice that I want to leave you with this week:
“At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind. It costs you relatively little to do this, but the benefit to them, and to the broader world, may be enormous. This is in fact one of the most valuable things you can do with your time and with your life."
The moral of the story: Encourage others to think bigger.
