The Power of Perspective: A Formula for a More Fulfilling Life
A common theme within this publication is the idea of perspective.
Having greater perspective on yourself (your desires, needs, and aspirations) and greater perspective on your world (your career, relationships, family, etc).
But what exactly is perspective?
Perspective is the wisdom you apply, via experience and insight, to make sense of and navigate your world.
Experience + Insight = Perspective
To gain better perspective you need to experience a large variety of situations. The more experiences you have, the more data you can use to predict outcomes and draw conclusions. With more experience, you will have a greater depth of knowledge from which to make decisions.
The surprising majority of people lack the breadth of experiences to gain any level of perspective outside of their tight bubble. I’m sure you know a few people like this—they stick to the same activities, the same locations, and never expand beyond that which they are comfortable with.
These people lack perspective.
However, experiences can be empty. You can have experienced a lot, but if you do not have the self-awareness to evaluate what happened it was all for naught. This is why you also need insight.
Insight is the process of dissecting your experiences. You take a critical look at these situations, with the benefit of hindsight, to glean valuable lessons.
This process of insight is quite literally unfolding in front of you via the Meaningfully Mundane newsletter. My aim with each post is for you to witness me pulling new insights from the experiences of my life.
For those who take the first step and expose themselves to new experiences, many don’t have the self-awareness or emotional regulation to critically evaluate themselves.
An example of someone who lacks this self-awareness, is a person who tries new things but always gets the same outcomes. Over time, they start to blame the outside world for their shortcomings or negative experiences, instead of placing the responsibility where it belongs.
These people have bad perspective.
Rich experiences coupled with valuable insights leads to a better perspective about yourself and your world. Gaining perspective is crucial for personal growth and long-term success.
Let’s look at a real world example of this process in action:
When I visited Spain in 2018, I found myself in a grocery store in a small city where hardly anyone spoke English. I was doing my best to get by on the Spanish I’d learned in high school some ten years prior.
At the checkout, the woman working the register asked me a question, to which I did not understand. This was a holiday in Spain, and the line behind me was growing by the minute, and here I was holding up the line frantically trying to figure out what she was asking me.
I could see and feel the impatience growing of everyone around me. Eventually someone a few bodies behind me shouted, “she wants to know if you’d like a bag for your things!”
I have, quite literally, never felt so dumb.
It was an experience I’d witnessed back in the States during my time in high school, but from the other perspective working as a grocery packer at a local store. Customers who didn’t speak much English trying their best to make sense of the questions the cashier was asking, while others scoffed at the hold up.
It was truly an eye-opening experience to be on the other end of this exchange. Afterward, I remember sitting in my hotel room and reflecting on what had happened and how it made me fell.
The insight was that this experience was freakin’ nerve-racking.
But it taught me a powerful lesson in compassion and kindness.
I left this exchange with new perspective that shifted how I see the world. Misunderstanding does not mean a lack of intelligence. If people have questions don’t speak down to them, help them understand.
Gaining perspective requires stepping outside of your comfort zone and having the self-awareness to evaluate yourself.
It requires the courage to recognize your mistakes and shortcomings. If you are brave enough to consistently follow this process, you will be more informed, make better decisions, and have more success and happiness throughout your life.
And most important of all, these experiences and insights don’t have to come from any special circumstances. They come from reflecting on our everyday moments, like bagging your groceries at the store. One might even call these moments, meaningfully mundane.
