Aretha Franklin was quoted sharing the following wisdom:
“You cannot define a person on just one thing. You can’t just forget all these wonderful and good things that a person has done because one thing didn’t come off the way you thought it should come off.”
It’s important to give people grace and the benefit of the doubt. We’re all human and make mistakes.
But I will add two additional points to consider:
Does the person take ownership over their mistakes? This is a prerequisite to changing behavior for the future.
Do they exhibit a repeated habit of hurtful behavior? One wrong doing is a mistake. A habit of wrong doing is indicative of one’s character.
Show grace when people mess up. Hold them to a standard to do better and make amends. And if they refuse, cut them loose. No exceptions.
