People who are secure in their identity won't be threatened by the identity of others.
In high school, possessing the awareness of and embracing your individual identity isn't cool because no one knows who they are. Every teenager is struggling to find themselves.
When we don't know how to act we look to those around us for examples. This creates a facade of "average." If a nail sticks out, it gets hammered. So everyone tries their best not to stick out.
Teenagers might feel they can only be passionate about something that their peers are passionate about, but they can't be more passionate about it than others.
They might feel like they can't stick up for what they believe in if it's different than the collective belief, because as a teenager—the majority always rules.

In fact, I'd wager those most secure in who they are as a person—their interests, goals, abilities, and values—are more open-minded and accepting of the inevitable differences from person to person.
It's those who aren't completely sure of their own identity who might feel threatened by the uniqueness of others.
Some adults are still trying to discover themselves. They’re trapped in that facade of average. These are the people most likely to judge others for coloring outside the lines.
Truthfully, we're always in a process of self-discovery. An abundant life of growth and experience makes this process never-ending. Each step along the way helps you uncover more of who you are.
Don't be afraid to explore your identity and definitely don't be afraid to express it in whatever way is most authentic to you. The right people will enjoy your quirks. Those that don't simply haven't discovered the power of their own yet.
