Takeaway: At the precipice of a big decision, fear can creep its way in. That fear as prevented numerous men and women from making a decision that could have drastically improved their quality of life. Instead of fearing making a change, flip the question and ask what happens if you do nothing.
Here’s a good perspective shift I heard from Alex Hormozi:
Instead of fearing the investment it costs to better yourself, inverse the consequences and ask how much it costs if you don’t invest in yourself.
Hormozi used the following example in the context of business:
“If you’re making 50k per year, but want to be making $1mil per year, simply asking how much it’ll cost in time and money to make up the difference will lead to fear. Instead, flip the consequences because doing nothing will cost you 950k/year in not knowing how to make a million.”
Investing $10k in a program that can close that gap for you seems like a no brainer when put into this context.
This may be an extreme example, especially for those of us who don’t have any desire to amass a fortune, but a real world example I experienced recently might hit home a little better.
I was recently on the phone with a prospective new member who suffered from MS, an autoimmune disorder that attacks the nerves. She had begun to grow so weak that she was losing her ability to walk unassisted. She knew that exercise could help build her strength and give her back her independence.
The only thing stopping her was fear around the investment in a coach.
Once we understood it was simply a fear, and that she could afford our program without going into debt, I asked her a simple question:
“Would you pay $600 to be able to walk again?”
Without hesitation, she agreed.
I knew I could help this woman, and I couldn’t let her walk away without understanding what was at stake. Not to mention, our money-back guarantee meant that she had nothing to lose.
Framed this way, the decision was easy for her.
She stopped letting fear get in the way of what she needed to do to invest in her future.
In what ways might your fears be holding you back from the investment you need to make for a better future?
If you’re unsure, or in need of making a big decision, try asking what happens if you do nothing.
