Featured Thoughts: Creating Your Own Luck
Takeaway: This was a fascinating look into serendipity, luck, and how to create more of both in your life. While there are many actionable tips in this article, I’ll share my over-arching advice on the topic.
If you want to create more luck for yourself, get out into the world.
Sitting at home, whether in front of the tv screen or behind the phone screen, isn’t going to lead to anything. You have to step out into the world. Meet new people. Try new activities. Actively participate in your life.
This is how you create serendipity. This is how you create new opportunities for yourself that seem like a lucky break. If you want to maximize the chances of something good happening to you, then you have to realize it’s a numbers game.
The more you actively participate, the more likely good things are going to happen.
This article also helped me make sense of why my two weeks in Portugal felt so much more profound than many of my other trips abroad. It’s because, as a solo traveler, I had opened myself up to these unusual opportunities as they presented themselves.
The meeting of someone new, who had a shared interest in bachata dancing, who could then lead me to a dance party near where I stayed. At any point I could have ignored the opportunity to chat with this gentleman and learn of our shared interest. Even if I’d gotten that far, I could easily have found a reason not to attend the party.
Admittedly, this embracing of chance encounters is easier as a solo traveler. I believe that’s because the more people in your group the more expectations you have to manage. Maybe that’s precisely why solo travel is so profound and so important for each person to experience.
That entire trip was an exercise in serendipity.
Being open to new possibilities, chance encounters, and training yourself to see these as opportunities to be pursued—all while getting out into your world as an active participant—is how you will make your own luck and invite serendipity into your world.
