Smart people know an unsettling truth: loyalty must be given before it's earned.
The best leaders I know extend trust and loyalty long before receiving it - they treat people as if they've already proven trustworthy.
This seems naive until you realize it's a forcing function: by acting as if people have already earned your trust, you create the conditions that make it almost inevitable that they will.
Instead of searching for win-win deals, create an environment where nothing else can exist. — Shane Parrish
There are two ways I go about giving people the benefit of the doubt that make it easier to do:
I never put all my eggs in one basket—or give control of that basket to someone else.
Whether it’s business or personal, I never risk so much that failure would be catastrophic. Not all of my health. Not all of my finances. Nothing to the degree that if it fell apart, my life would be ruined.I treat setbacks as tuition, not betrayal.
If a deal goes bad, I’ll take a hit—but it won’t break me. That’s the price of learning someone’s true character. But I won’t let one bad experience make me cynical or hesitant to extend trust in the future.
Giving trust before it’s earned is easier when you’ve the stage for success while protecting yourself from worst-case outcomes.
