Featured Thoughts: How Marketing Can Help You In Fitness
Takeaway: There was a girl nervously hovering in the foyer of a marketing firm. An employee finally approached her to ask if she needed help. She nervously began to explain how she was in school, had a fascination for marketing, and wanted to try her luck at getting an internship at this particular company.
While the company didn’t have an internship program in place, the employee was so taken aback by the girl’s willingness to show up in person, that they created a program just for her.
Costly Signaling is the idea that the more it costs us—whether in time, effort, money, or other resources—to accomplish a task, the more weight we give to its significance.
As famous marketer Rory Sutherland said,
“The meaning and significance we attach to something is felt in direct proportion to the expense with which it is communicated.”
This is why graduating school is so meaningful, because it takes use the better part of two decades to achieve. Raising a child—a lifetime. That promotion costs much blood, sweat, and tears. These achievements have a high cost of time, effort, and money, that they feel far more significant than making a ham sandwich.
That’s why some shoes can sell for $90, and others $490. Scarcity and the effort involved to attain the pair of $490 shoes makes them feel more valuable. The effort signals that the cost is worth it.
There is little more meaningful than transforming your life through fitness, and that is reflected in the effort involved. Implementing permanent lifestyle changes, challenging your identity, and showing up consistently—even when you don’t want to—these all signal that this is a meaningful goal. That it’s valuable.
And yet, unlike the effort we will expend to attain the $490 pair of shoes, we are quick to give up on the transformation that will quite literally change the trajectory of our life.
